Kehilaton: 02/27/10

From the desk of Rabbi Marcelo Bater
February 26/7, 2010   13 Adar 5770

You might find it strange that Megillat Esther (which we read this weekend) - is the only book in the entire Bible where the name of G-d doesn't appear. The following might help shed some light on this "mystery."

One summer day a number of years ago, the Greenberg brothers came to the office of Henry Ford, the owner of the most popular car company in America (and also a known anti-Semite).

Hyman Greenberg, the oldest brother, began the dialog...

"Mr. Ford, he said, we have an invention that will revolutionize your car company."

Mr. Ford was not interested in the brothers, but the threat of them giving their invention to the competition, convinced him to listen on.

Norman Greenberg, the middle brother, told Mr. Ford that they wanted to actually show him the invention and not just talk about it. So, they all walked down to a car in the parking lot.

When they arrived, the brothers asked Mr. Ford to get into the car. "You're crazy", said the businessman, "we're in the middle of summer...it will be almost 100 degrees in there at this time of day!"

Max, the youngest brother, then told him, "Don't worry - when you enter the car just press the button on the console."

Ford finally did what Max said. He pressed "the button" and suddenly, a cold blast of air hit his face. Not only was it not hot, but it was very comfortable!

Ford was amazed, and immediately asked them: "How much would the rights to this invention cost me?" Norman answered: "One million dollars - but there's a condition - 'Greenberg Brothers Air Conditioning' must appear right near the Ford logo in every car that your company makes."

The money was not a problem, but there was no way that Mr. Ford would agree to have "Greenberg Brothers Air Conditioning" appear near his logo.

Negotiations continued for some time, but, finally, an agreement was reached. The price for the invention was to be one and one-half million dollars and the Greenberg family name was to never appear in any Ford car.

The Greenbergs kept their word. Today and henceforth; only the first names of the three brothers appear in Ford cars near the Ford logo: "HI", "NORM" and "MAX"!

So you see that even though G-d's name may be missing from Megillat Esther, if we pay careful attention to the Megillah's content and to our daily lives and actions, we're sure to see that G-d's sign is still always present!

Shabbat Shalom and Purim Sameach!
