Kehilaton: 12/12/09

From the Desk of Rabbi Marcelo Bater
December 11/12, 2009   25 Kislev 5770

On Friday evening, December 11, we begin one of the most beautiful festivals of our calendar - The Festival of Hanukkah.

"What is Hanukkah?

Our Sages taught: Beginning with the twenty-fifth of Kislev, during the days of Hanukkah, we neither fast nor mourn. For the idolaters entered the Sanctuary and defiled all the oils in the Sanctuary; and when the power of the Hasmoneans overcame and defeated them, they searched, but found no more than one flask of oil, sealed with the seal of the High Priest, and there was not enough oil in it to last more than one day. But a miracle took place, and they kindled with it for eight days. For future years, therefore, they established these days as days of feasting, praise and thanksgiving"

Talmud, Shabbat 21b.

Yes, what happened on Hanukkah was a miracle and we recall it with the phrase: Nes Gadol Hayah Sham - A Great Miracle Happened There.

On a personal note, I recall the first time our family visited Walt Disney World Parks - "The Magic Kingdom." As we entered the big parking lot and saw the giant welcoming sign: "A Place Where Dreams Come True", I knew from the faces of our kids that this was truly a place where their dreams came true!

As for dreams in our Jewish history, the Bible is full of characters who dreamt all the time. Even Joseph, whom we meet in this week's Sedrah, is known in our tradition as "Joseph, the Dreamer".

Indeed, our religion teaches us that G-d revealed Himself to our prophets via either a vision or a dream. Depending on each character, G-d decided how to reveal to them, but the goal was always the same - to bring a message, to give hope, or to teach that someone is listening to them.

Temple Beth Israel today is not the exception - our leaders and congregants, too, are dreamers. We dreamt over the past number of years for a new permanent home, and, thank G-d, this dream is now coming true!

So, keep on dreaming for your personal goals and dreams to come true. And never forget the immortal words of Theodore Herzl: "Eem Tirtzu Ayn Zo Agada" - "If you sincerely desire it, it will come true!"

Shabbat Shalom and Hanukkah Sameach!
