Kehilaton: 11/14/09

From the Desk of Rabbi Marcelo Bater
November 13/14, 2009   27 Cheshvan 5770

This Kehilaton issue is dedicated to the blessed memory of Esther Libowsky, z"l, mother of Elaine Cohn, President of Temple Beth Israel.

Thousands of years ago and written in the Book of Proverbs, King Solomon asked the question:  "Ayshet-Chayel Mi Yimtza?" - "A Woman of Valor, Who Can Find?"

This Shabbat, we read Parashat Chayei Sarah (Sarah's Life) which begins with the death of Sarah, and continues into the story of our second matriarch, Rebecca.  Thus, this is an appropriate time to contemplate whether Sarah and Rebecca were "women of valor".

But regardless of whether Sarah and/or Rebecca are "Solomon-official" women of valor, we can safely say that Jewish women have certainly played a very important role within our tradition!

For example...
  • Sarah was the first matriarch, and we still mention her name in our tefillot.
  • Our Torah says that Abraham is told by G-d to listen to Sarah's advice (Genesis 21:12).
  • Sarah is the only woman in the Bible whose name is changed by G-d (Genesis 17:15).
  • When Abraham heard about the passing of his wife, he went directly to buy a piece of land in order to bury her - thus underscoring Sarah's importance.
  • "Sarah's lifetime came to one hundred and twenty-seven years" (Genesis 23:1).  This is a very significant number as it is a combination of the ideal life span (120) and the sacred number (7).
  • Rebecca and Isaac exemplified the first "love story" in the Bible.  Although the marriage was arranged, the Torah confirms (Genesis 24:67) that the couple's love and devotion grew over time.
So, dear reader, if you are a woman, be proud of your matriarchal ancestor's important roles and accomplishments.

Yes, women should receive the same respect as men, and we (men and women, alike) should work together to create a society where the rights of women become equal to those of men in all the countries of the world!

Once, I had the pleasure of meeting a great woman of valor - to your memory, Esther Libowsky!

Shabbat Shalom.
