Dear Friends,

In this week’s parashah, Va’etchanan, we find the Shema Yisroel commandment: "Thou shalt love the Lord Thy G-d…" (Deuteronomy 6:5).

Now, isn’t this commandment a rather unusual one for the Torah? After all, love is a personal feeling, so how is it possible that the Torah commands us to "Love G-d"?

Maybe we can better understand this by realizing that the book of Deuteronomy is different from the rest since it represents the words of Moses rather than the direct speech of G-d.

Deuteronomy puts forth Moses’ last speech to the people, and it is in this speech where Moses encourages them to love G-d with not a simple love, but a real one -- "…with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might".

That is real love!

Our temple is facing a challenging time, and there are many ways to show love and support of TBI.

Since we are planning an OPEN HOUSE (August 9th at La Quinta Hotel, from 12 noon – 2 PM), one especially good way is to attend the Open House and encourage your friends and relatives to also drop by and learn how becoming members of Temple Beth Israel will benefit them.

Let’s together love Temple Beth Israel.

Shabbat Shalom!
