Kehilaton: 10/24/09
This Shabbat we read Parashat Noah, which tells the familiar story of Noah who, along with his family, were the only ones saved by G-d from the big flood because, as stated in the first sentence of the Parasha, "Noah hayah ish tzadik v'tamim b'dorotav" - "Noah was a righteous man; blameless in his generation". Following the flood, G-d accepted responsibility for it but tempered his anger with His "never-again" promise: "I will not again doom the earth because of humanity, since the devisings of the human mind are evil from their youth, now will I never again destroy every living being as I have done". There's an important lesson to be learned here... Recall that in last week's Bereshit Torah portion we read about the first homocide of the world - Cain killing Abel. Although the Bible attributed this to jealousy, we might ask: Where were Adam and Eve at the time? Why were Adam and Eve not involved in their sons' problems? Why were they just spectators? Why didn't they "see the problem"? Hence the lesson for today's modern times. When we witness any kind of anti-Semitism, listen to discriminatory sayings declaring that "Israel has to disappear from the map", hear Holocaust denials, etc. - it's a good time to think about "seeing" the problem, facing it, and being involved in it! And, at such moments, let's be reminded of how G-d sent a flood only once in history to destroy a generation, and of how we, today, must take responsibility for our own "floods". Yes, we have the power to destroy today's generation if we so chose. But if we chose instead to take a good degree of responsibility and to "see" problem situations, we can be saved just like Noah and his family were saved within his generation! Shabbat Shalom! |
